COT
For our COT, we discussed Dr. Michael Greger’s article about how calorie dense processed foods combine sugar, fat and salt in ways that can override our natural signals of hunger and fullness. We went around the circle and shared what was on our dinner tables growing up, because the way we eat is shaped by family, culture, comfort and memory long before we begin making intentional choices. These foods stimulate the brain’s reward system and keep us chasing another dopamine hit, using some of the same pathways involved in other compulsive behaviors and drug addiction. The point was not to label foods as good or bad, but to recognize that what feels like a lack of discipline may actually be biology, habit and environment working together, and that understanding those influences gives us a better chance to choose differently.
