On July 5, I ended up on a boat with a bunch of people I had never met before. One of the guys started talking to me about his workouts. He was a big, muscular guy who went to the gym every day, worked on progressive overload, and was very focused on getting stronger and looking better.
He asked me what I did, and I just said, “I work out every day.”
He looked at me and said, “You work out every day?”
I told him, “Some people work out to look better. Some people work out to feel better. And some people work out to be better.”
A few days later, I was at Wrigley Field with my 14 year old daughter, singing along to every song and connecting with her in a way that I am not sure this gentleman’s father ever connected with him. He had spent so much of his life focused on himself.
One of the things I always try to teach my children is to think about the impact they have on everybody around them.
As Parker and I stood there singing together, I felt incredibly grateful to have found a community where we are not just working out to look better. We are surrounded by people who challenge us, push us, show up for us, and help us become better people.
And that is that.
