Sometimes it takes an emotionally intelligent teenager to call you out on some questionable behavior. Sometimes it’s takes an additional hour of reflection (and arguing with yourself trying to every which way to justify your original impulse) before you can muster the courage to apologize. But you ultimately realize that an apology is the best and most appropriate outcome for everyone. What you gain (emotional capital, trust, respect, gratitude) outweighs the cost an hundred fold. And what is the cost, really. Some embarrassment? Admitting you were wrong? Demonstrating vulnerability will earn you so much more credibility, trust, and respect with your loved ones in the long run.
