3 mile ruck with partners talking about mental health. Had some great discussions that I would not have thought possible. Here’s a list of questions we used to jump off from.
When life feels heavy, what are the first signs you notice in your body or behavior that tell you something is off!
Who is the first person you usually reach out to when you are struggling, and what makes that person feel safe?
What did you learn about handling emotions from the men in your life growing up, and how does that show up now?
What helps you reset when your stress starts to pile up, even in small ways?
What makes it hard to talk about mental health with other men?
What does support actually look like for you when you are not doing well?
When was a time someone showed up for you in a way that really mattered?
What is one habit or pattern you know helps your mental health, but you struggle to keep consistent?
How can this group do a better job of checking in on each other outside of workouts?
What is one thing you wish more people understood about what you are carrying right now?
What does taking care of your mental health actually look like in a normal week, not an ideal one?
What is something you wish you had learned earlier about asking for help?
When you feel overwhelmed, do you tend to shut down, distract yourself, or push harder, and how does that usually work out?
What is one thing that helps you feel grounded when your thoughts start to spiral?
What would it look like to give yourself the same grace you give the people you care about?
COT
With the sudden death of the 13yo in my daughter’s orbit and thinking a lot about my own mortality. Tuesday’s discussion led by Lord of the Dance on our legacy led me to really question what I’m doing. Tomorrow night we’re going to play a song my high school friend wrote about my grandfather type who was a WW2 vet and got his Purple Heart on Omaha Beach. How terrifying that must have been. He survived killing Nazis and came home and taught some kids hillbilly music. That’s his legacy. I’ve had a year full of questioning myself about my patterns, behavior, legacy and F3 has brought me into another man’s body, and another man’s mind. I sometimes don’t recognize this person. But I love the guys that get up every day and are willing to be so open and supportive. It will shape my family for generations.
